Yay! I'm listening to SPOS for the first time in a month. It is shameful how happy this makes me.
Anyways, I want to talk about less than three.
Whenever I get a text, or an LJ comment that contains the phrase "<3", it always brightens my day. I have no idea why, but it means a lot to me.
I guess because it gives people a way to say "I care about you", without sounding wierd or mushy. Semi-recently I was writing a birthday card for a close friend. I wanted to express how much I valued thier friendship, and that I cared about them, but I had no idea how.
I ended up just writing the typical mundane bullshit, but at the end I scribbled "<<3". I figured it successfully expressed that I cared about this person, but didn't come off strange. And from the reaction, that ended up being true.
Maybe I think it's great that the computer has givin us a way to express ideas that there are no words for. Just one more reason Alex loves technology.
Heh heh, A journalist was dissing the blog. Mitch Joel is pissed. :D

Less than three is also one of my favourite internet expressions. As you mentioned, it allows the user to convey positive feelings toward someone without being cheesy. It also can be used as an alternative to "I love you," which too many people in today's world are too afraid to use. <3 can mean the speaker loves or likes the listener, it can mean the speaker loves or likes some content or reference to content, it can even mean "I miss you."
Unfortunately, less than three can also lead to confusion and miscommunication. Caroline was asked by a male peer at UBC what it meant when a girl non-cessantly used the expression in a conversation. He was unsure if she was just an excitable person who was often pleased-
I have to interrupt my train of thought. I just had the most vivid memory of going into the gym via the stairway between upstairs where Mr. Hood's class was, and downstairs where Mrs. Phan's class was. The one with the elevator-type thing. It was grade 7 and it was Valentine's Day and there was a dance going on. I'm really glad I had this memory while typing to someone who will actually know what I'm talking about.
- or she had a huge crush on him. I think that <3 is definitely a useful and positive expression, however it should never be used to hinder traditional communication. And by that I mean than <3 should be used in situations in which the speaker and the listener are both aware of its meaning.
Hey! Thanks for reading. I really appreciate the comment. You officially pwn my other "friends". Just kidding, of course.
You managed to say exactly what I was trying to get at in a way that was much more well thought out.
At the same time, some people interperet the meaning slightly differently. To some, it makes no difference because they understand that it is designed to express standard positive feelings. Some people, like myself, aren't naive about the meaning, but rather appreciate it more.
Hope that made sense.
Thanks again! <3
